It arises in the humerus epicondyle close to the wrist area.

. It is a superficial muscle that becomes very visible as the wrist comes into flexion. The flexor carpi radialis muscle is a long superficial muscle of the forearm that belongs to the anterior muscle group and lies in the first layer. The more extensive ulnar head originates from the olecranon and proximal part of the posterior border of ulna.

As the muscle fibers pass towards the wrist joint they converge on a long tendon in the distal part of the forearm. Extensor digiti minimi originates from the lateral epicondyle of humerus via the common extensor tendon that it shares with extensor digitorum extensor carpi radialis brevis and extensor carpi ulnaris muscles. The muscle courses inferiorly however its proximal fibers are usually indistinguishably fused with those of the extensor digitorum muscle.
